It may be a little known fact that I quite often take commissions to photograph maternity / pregnancy photos. Of course more often than not, they are nudes. I love photographing maternity nudes as, just like with any naked woman, they are all different. Every pregnant belly is a different shape and size depending on the woman and the stage of the pregnancy. There are often limitations to the poses due to the comfort of the subject and to show the belly off, the pose usually has to be side on in profile.
My style of studio nudes suits maternity nudes extremely well with either side or backlighting against a dark background highlighting the beautiful curves of the pregnant belly. Recently however, I’ve been experimenting with a more high key style and my most recent maternity shoot involved some body painting which presented a whole new set of challenges. As you can see from the example below, it turned out beautifully thanks to my wonderful makeup artist Jessalee and our beautiful and patient subject Dom.
