Naked Edge Exhibition

Last night was the opening of my second exhibition for the year. Naked Edge Photography exhibition is a joint exhibition by myself and good friend Joel of Fetigraphy. Joel is an amazing exponent of latex alternative fashion and nude photography so to compliment his wonderful imagery, I chose to exhibit some of my alternative nude and fetish photography, some of which has never been seen before.

The night was a great success with over 100 people through the doors and both Joel and I making a few sales we couldn’t be happier. A really big thanks must go to Steven Fellows for believing in us and for pushing for the exhibition to go ahead. Also massive thanks to Troy Williams, the owner of C Gallery for having enough faith to use us for the very first photographic exhibition at his gallery. Fashion Weekly were on hand to review the show and to snap all of the social pics from the evening.

The exhibition is showing at C Gallery in the Emporium complex, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane for the next two weeks.

Naked In Baja Exhibition and Book Launch

As the final touches are being made to my first art nude book, Naked In Baja, I’ve decided that I should have an official launch and combine it with an exhibition of selected images from the project. The official opening of the exhibition and the book launch will be held at the new Foto Frenzy Photography Centre‘s gallery space on Friday March 8, 2013.

I couldn’t think of a better way to launch my very first book than by hosting a party and inviting my friends and colleagues to share a drink surrounded by my images on the walls of the Foto Frenzy Gallery.

September has been pretty good to me so far. Apart from having an amazing 40th birthday party full of lovely burlesque performers and good friends, a gallery of my images from my trip to California and Baja Mexico is being featured this month on the art nude website, Michelle 7.com

This is the third time I have been the feature gallery on this site and I am quite honoured for my work to be so revered by Jack Gilbert, the editor of Michelle 7.

Art of the Human Form Workshop

A couple of weeks ago now, I had the pleasure of working with the amazing Anne Duffy Model on a Foto Frenzy, Art of the Human Form Photography Workshop. The location was a beautiful property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland with it’s own little rocky creek and waterfalls which made it the perfect backdrop for some artistic nude photography. Our host and second model, Chelsea Jayde and her husband were very generous with offering their property for us to use for the day and they also put on an amazing lunch which everyone very much appreciated.

The feedback from the participants has been wonderful and everyone seemed to learn a lot. For some, it was their first introduction to photographing the human form and it was a great honour that they chose my workshop to be exposed to this wonderful art form. I do hope that they now want to keep exploring artistic nude photography as an art form and they can get as much enjoyment out of this challenging photography genre as I have.

Foto Frenzy Art of Nude Photography Workshop

Last weekend was the first official Art of Nude Photography workshop that I’ve run for Foto Frenzy - Brisbane’s leading photography course and workshop company. We had two amazing models – Mea Culpa and Frankie Vandellous and a great little group of photographers involved.
While predominately a practical workshop, we started with a presentation which outlined the different genres of nude photography, covered some tips on working with models in both a studio and outdoor environment and also talked about using window light, studio lighting and natural light outdoors.

It was then time to start taking pictures so we went through a couple of daylight / window light techniques, with each photographer getting ample time to shoot with both models. After lunch we continued shooting, this time with a variety of studio lighting setups, including both high key and low key examples.

All in all it was a great day of photography in the Foto Frenzy studio and apart from Frankie finding the air conditioning a little too cold, everyone had a really enjoyable day and the photographers learnt a lot about the Art of Nude Photography.

World’s Greatest Erotic Art

Waaay back in August 2010 I entered a competition run by www.eroticsignature.com and while I didn’t win, I was told in September that one of my images was chosen to be published in the competition book called The Worlds Greatest Erotic Art of Today – Volume 4. Fantastic! I thought, it will be great to see my image in print along with some other great erotic photographic works. April 2011 rolled around and I received an email to say that the book was finally available for pre-order and as one of the finalists, I was eligible for a free copy! Of course I still had to pay the $44 to get it shipped from the USA but I could live with that. September 2011 arrives and so does another email to say that books had finally shipped!……from Hong Kong to their warehouse in Miami

So since that last email back in Sept last year I had totally forgotten all about the book until today when I received one of those little notifications from the post office to say I had an international parcel to collect. Sure enough it was THE BOOK! In fact books plural as I ended up ordering another copy so I could give one to my lovely model Lara who featured in my selected image.

So here you have it, the book I never thought would arrive, finally has. I guess they just skipped over the 2011 competition. I wonder if they will start the whole process again for a 2012 competition? If they do I’m not sure I could be bothered doing it all again.

2011 in Review

2011 was a pretty good year for me although it wasn’t until November that I started to gain some real direction for my photography. My trip to the USA and Baja, Mexico was obviously the highlight of the year and as you have already seen from the blog posts from that trip, it produced some really great images that I am very proud of. It also aided me in finding direction, not only with my photography but also my life in general. Since returning I am now a director in a new company called Foto Frenzy along with some very good friends of mine, Tony Holden, Darren Jew, Adam Finch and Ian Poole. We aim to be Brisbane’s leading photography course and workshop company and with the talent we have among our tutors, I’m sure this will soon be a reality.

I’ve also just started a brand new business for my own photography called The Model Experience which will operate out of the same premises / studio as Foto Frenzy. Of course I will continue to photograph artistic nudes and maternity nudes but I will also be shooting fashion portraits and boudoir style glamour portraits plus model portfolios.

So 2012 is shaping up to be a very busy year indeed but before I get stuck into it with all the new shoots I have planned, I thought I would share some of my favourite images from my Australian shoots from 2011. Enjoy

Maternity Nudes

It may be a little known fact that I quite often take commissions to photograph maternity / pregnancy photos. Of course more often than not, they are nudes. I love photographing maternity nudes as, just like with any naked woman, they are all different. Every pregnant belly is a different shape and size depending on the woman and the stage of the pregnancy. There are often limitations to the poses due to the comfort of the subject and to show the belly off, the pose usually has to be side on in profile.

My style of studio nudes suits maternity nudes extremely well with either side or backlighting against a dark background highlighting the beautiful curves of the pregnant belly. Recently however, I’ve been experimenting with a more high key style and my most recent maternity shoot involved some body painting which presented a whole new set of challenges. As you can see from the example below, it turned out beautifully thanks to my wonderful makeup artist Jessalee and our beautiful and patient subject Dom.

An Aussie In Mexico

Being from Queensland, it’s quite common to refer to anyone who resides “south of the border” in New South Wales or Victoria as a Mexican. So it was only fitting that Anne Duffy (who hails from the ACT) be the one to pose with some big cactus and don the big sombrero for this amazing late afternoon shoot around the old Cannery. Anne was the one that really wanted to do this shoot and I felt rather privileged that she chose me to be the photographer.

Anne and I have worked together on at least 3 previous occasions when she has ventured north to visit me in Queensland so I guess it’s definitely my turn to drive south and pay her a visit next time. Wherever we do end up doing our next shoot I am sure I won’t be disappointed with the results as Anne is such an amazing model and even though she might be a Mexican as far as us Queenslanders go, I’m very proud to call her a fellow Aussie.
